Professor Patrick Dessein obtained his MD from the Catholic University Louvain, Belgium and his FCP (SA) and PhD from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in South Africa. He received his FRCP (UK) in 2007. He is an Honorary Full Research Professor at the Cardiovascular Pathophysiology and Genomics Research Unit, School of Physiology, Faculty of Health Sciences and a member of the Human Research Ethics Committee (Medical), University of The Witwatersrand, and is in private practice (Rheumatology) at Milpark Hospital, Johannesburg. He is a member of the Transatlantic Risk Calculator for Rheumatoid Arthritis Consortium (ATACC-RA) on the African continent. He is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Rheumatology and of the Journal of Cardiology and Therapy. He was a Guest Editor for a special issue on atherosclerosis in rheumatoid arthritis in Mediators of Inflammation in 2012, and is presently the Lead Guest Editor for a special issue on the elucidation, assessment and management of enhanced cardiovascular risk in rheumatoid arthritis in Biomed Research International. He served on the National Research Foundation Advisory Committee for Funding of rated and unrated researchers in 2013. He has performed research on neuroendocrine deficiencies including autonomic dysfunction in rheumatic diseases. His main current research interest is in the mechanisms involved in enhanced cardiovascular risk and disease in rheumatic diseases and in the impact of socioeconomic deprivation and epidemiological transition stage on disease outcomes in rheumatoid arthritis. He is the first/senior author of over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts that are mostly published in high impact journals including the highest impact journals in Rheumatology. His current H index is 25. He is presently a National Research Foundation B rated (internationally recognized) scientist.
